You’re probably aware of the general rules around playing golf, as it’s a very polite game that depends on everyone having good sportsmanship. But out on the green isn’t the only place where you need to be respectful of others. When you’re driving your golf cart around the course, there are several things you should do to avoid causing upset or distracting someone during their swing. Here are some etiquette tips for driving your golf cart in a courteous manner.

Use the Path

You should not drive on the grass if the course doesn’t permit it, no matter how much you’ve seen it in the movies. It takes a lot of work to maintain and manicure the grass on a golf course, and driving your cart all over the place will tear up the turf and make it unplayable. Stick to the course’s established cart path when you see “Cart Path Only” signs and only drive on the grass.

Follow the 90° Rule

Approaching your golf ball at a 90° angle will help to minimize how much time your golf cart tires spend on the grass. You’ll do less damage to the turf this way.

Keep the Noise Down

Making a lot of noise, whether it’s from a raucous conversation or your radio, is extremely distracting to other players and very rude. Keep your conversations quiet and turn off your music entirely when approaching people at a hole.
